Pigeon Valley Fire update 35 - 15:45 hours 11/02/2019

More than 700 animals are being cared for by the Ministry for Primary Industries, SPCA,  Helping You Help Animals trust (HUHANZ), and volunteers at the Richmond Showgrounds.

Animal welfare is the top priority for these agencies.

Many are smaller animals, including birds and chickens. Animals of any size can be brought directly to the Showgrounds to be looked after.

When possible, representatives are working behind the cordon, taking food and water and in some cases evacuating animals. Where possible, animals are being tended to in place, which is less stressful for them.

People have been visiting the showgrounds to look at the animals. This can be a hindrance for the teams looking after animals and moving animals onto the site. If you don’t have anything to do with the animals, please stay away.

Anyone worried about animals in the fire affected area should phone MPI on 0800 008 333 (option 4).

If you have contacted our 0800 number and left a message, your call will be returned as quickly as is possible. There is a large number of calls and more people have been brought in to answer and make calls.
