Pigeon Valley Fire update 46 - 12:00 hours 13/02/2019

Rubbish and recycling will be collected in Redwood Valley, Golden Hills Road, Eves Valley and Teapot Valley on Wednesday as far as the cordons. Once roads are reopened permanently collections will be arranged.

Fire situation

Today's focus is on securing the containment lines and extinguishing hotspots in the fire zone. Fire and Emergency also has a team focussed on assessing dangerous trees.

Resources working today include around 150 personnel, 14 heavy machines (dozers and excavators), and 9 helicopters.

The fire perimeter is about 33km, covering around 2,400 hectares.

The total fire ban remains in place, and there is a ban on use of heavy machinery in most of the Nelson Tasman region.

The Civil Defence State of Emergency has been extended until 20 February.

Fire and Emergency continue to remind everyone to be vigilant and report any sign of fire or suspicious activity to 111.

Community meeting

A reminder about the community meeting tonight (Wednesday). Come along to the Hope Community Church, Raznau Road, starting 7pm. The Mayor, Fire and Emergency and other experts will be on hand to provide an update and answer questions.

Conditional re-entry for residents

We are working with Fire and Emergency and Police on conditional re-entry to the Valleys. This is a complex task with about 200 properties involved. We are not in a position to advise on timeframes but teams are working on risk assessment and a plan for conditional re-entry.

Where to get help

The Civil Defence Centre is open daily from 8am to 7pm at the Richmond New Life Church, 85 Wensley Road. They will be providing support and connecting people

to the appropriate support agencies.

The volunteer community in Nelson continues to provide amazing support to those affected. The Suburbs Clubrooms at Saxton is open for affected residents that need assistance with grocery suppliers.

There's a handy guide to support that is available and where you can get help. It has contacts for health and safety advice, information about how to get financial assistance if you’ve been affected by the fire, insurance information and more.
