Pigeon Valley Fire update 72 - 15:32 hours 25/02/2019

Fire update
Good weather conditions have aided the firefighting effort. Fire and Emergency New Zealand has achieved a 30-metre "blackout" zone around the entire perimeter of the fire, a goal they have been working towards for some time. Work is now focussed on expanding that zone to 50 metres.
The location and elimination of hotspots is also ongoing.

Civil Defence Centre
With residents now settled back in their homes and demand decreasing, the decision has been made to close the Civil Defence Centre that has been operating from the New Life Church in Wensley Road in Richmond as of 4 pm today (Monday 25 February).
A range of support remains available to residents, including mental health, financial assistance and practical support. Details are available on the website.

Mayoral Disaster relief fund
Applications are now invited for the Nelson Tasman District Mayoral Disaster Relief Fund.
The criteria and application form is now available on the Tasman District Council website.  https://tasman.govt.nz/link/mayoral-fund

Cordons lifted
The decision was made yesterday to lift the remaining cordons so access to all the affected Valleys is now available. However, Civil Defence Controller Brennan Wiremu says it is important that everyone remains aware of the potential for sudden changes.
"Excellent progress has been made with the fire but it is still burning and as a result, we need valley residents to stay vigilant."
