Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer

Fixed term indicative end date of December 2020 | Responsible for aspects of operational service delivery across the 4 R’s – reduction, readiness, response and recovery

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) is a Crown Entity established in 2017.  The role of FENZ is to reduce unwanted fires, respond to structural and vegetation fires and other emergencies including motor vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, hazardous substance related incidents, natural disasters and support increased community resilience.

We are seeking applications for the role of Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer (DPRFO) to support the Principal Rural Fire Officer in managing operations in our Wellington District.  

This involves: -

  • contributing to and taking responsibility for the operational performance and management of rural fire across a specified geographical district
  • ensuring that Volunteer Rural Fire Forces within geographical area of responsibility are operationally ready and supported to provide the fire and emergency service needs for their communities
  • ensuring a state of readiness for rural fire control both across the district and within a specific geographical area
  • at times working with the risk reduction team to reduce the risk of rural wildfires
  • preference for RFO qualifications

As the DPRFO works closely with rural volunteers providing support, management, co-ordination and delivery of operational activities across the district you need to have a good understanding of volunteering and best approaches to engaging with volunteers effectively.   Key to this are your excellent communication and influencing skills along with the ability to form good working relationships with all the stakeholders.    Proven operational experience, preferably from within the rural sector, will be valuable.

We also need the following skills and attributes: -

  • Current drivers licence (heavy traffic licence desirable)
  • Adaptable and able to demonstrate leadership capability
  • Able to work autonomously at times but also in collaboration with colleagues
