About the role

We have a permanent opportunity for a Legal Counsel, based at National Headquarters on The Terrace in Wellington.  You will be a key component of our collegial in-house Legal Team, providing high quality, specialist legal advice and support to all groups and teams within Fire and Emergency New Zealand. 

Our Legal Team consists of a Chief Legal Advisor and five Legal Counsel. The team provides a wide range of legal advice and services. This generally covers the areas of public law, commercial law, regulatory compliance, as well as operational matters; and it includes:

Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s legislative and regulatory requirements, its responsibilities as a Crown entity, Official Information Act requests, and advice on privacy law

Corporate activities including procurement, commercial contracts, property, information and communications technology (ICT) and legal issues regarding the built environment

Operational emergency management

Health and safety 

Investigations and regulatory compliance

Litigation management for civil, criminal and coronial matters

About you

To be successful in this role, must have a current practicing certificate and be a senior lawyer with at least 8 years PQE. You will have a mix of expertise in different areas of the law, for example:  

  • Public law and machinery of government
  • Health and Safety law
  • Official Information Act requests
  • Privacy law, including privacy impact assessments
  • Emergency management sector
  • Investigations and regulatory compliance
  • Operational advice
  • Legislative policy
  • The built environment (RMA and local planning)
  • Litigation or litigation management    

You will:

  • Be an enabler with the ability to influence and the desire to assist our organisation and consistently add value
  • have experience in contentious matters 
  • be recognised for your pragmatic approach
  • have outstanding relationship management skills with both internal and external stakeholders
  • have excellent written and oral communication skills.

It is an additional advantage to have completed the Government Regulatory Practice Initiative’s (G-Reg’s) qualification in Regulatory Compliance (Core Knowledge) (Level 3).

the remuneration ragne for this role is $141,629-157,365
