Legal Counsel - Fixed Term

Due to increased demand for our services, we have a six-month fixed-term or secondment opportunity to join Fire and Emergency’s internal Legal Team. This role would suit a Senior Lawyer who has a mix of legal skills and experience. You may be a Senior Public Law Lawyer who has several years’ experience working in a government agency. You must be a good all-rounder who can confidently work across a wide range of legal issues.

About the role

We have a six-month fixed term or secondment opportunity for a Legal Counsel, which must be based at National Headquarters on The Terrace in Wellington (although some working from home is available).  You will be a key component of our collegial senior in-house Legal Team, providing high quality, specialist legal advice and support.

There is an opportunity for some work with all groups and teams within Fire and Emergency (excluding employment and commercial law).   

Our Legal Team consists of a Chief Legal Advisor, five Legal Counsel and a Legal Executive. The team provides a wide range of legal advice and services. Our work generally covers the areas of public law, commercial law, regulatory compliance, as well as operational matters; and it includes:

  • Statutory interpretation and Fire and Emergency’s legislative and regulatory requirements, its responsibilities as a Crown entity, Official Information Act requests, and advice on privacy law
  • Corporate activities including procurement, commercial contracts, property, information and communications technology (ICT)
  • Legal issues regarding the built environment
  • Operational emergency management
  • Advice on internal and external publications
  • Health and safety
  • Investigations and regulatory compliance
  • Litigation management for civil, criminal and coronial matters 

 This is a six-month fixed term role reporting to the Chief Legal Advisor. 

 About you

To be successful in this role, you must have a current practicing certificate and be a Senior Lawyer with at least 8 years PQE. While you do not need experience in all areas of our internal legal practice, experience in some of the areas referred to above (excluding employment and commercial law) is a must. 

 In addition, you will;

  • be an enabler with the ability to influence and the desire to assist our organisation and consistently add value;
  • have experience in contentious matters; 
  • be recognised for your pragmatic approach;
  • have outstanding relationship management skills with both internal and external stakeholders; and
  • have excellent written and oral communication skills.

It is an additional advantage to have completed the Government Regulatory Practice Initiative’s (G-Reg’s) qualification in Regulatory Compliance (Core Knowledge) (Level 3).
