Fire and Emergency New Zealand was set up under new legislation in July 2017, combining 40 urban and rural fire services and 14,000 people. We became one national emergency management organisation to keep New Zealanders, their property and our unique environment safe.

Our firefighters educate communities to build their resilience by helping them prepare for, respond to and recover well from emergencies.

We respond to a wide variety of emergencies including motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, dealing with hazardous substances, severe weather events and natural disasters. We work to reduce risk to make our communities safer, through fire safety campaigns, research, and by providing advice on the Building Code.

About the role

The National Headquarters is a single management and service group representing a range of specialist management disciplines providing expert advice and services to internal and external customers and stakeholders.  The Information Communication & Technology Service (ICTS) group is responsible for the following 4 functional areas; ICT Strategy, IT Service Delivery, Data & Spatial Application Service and Telecommunications.

It is the responsibility of the jobholder to work in this context and provide a superior, quality focused and relevant service to their clients. Specifically, we are looking to assist the current team with the additional work required to meet the telecommunications requirements of rural in a nationally consistent manner.

The core purpose of the Regional Telecommunications Specialist (RTS-) is to provide support for telecommunications both regional and national level within Fire and Emergency NZ.  The RTS- is also required to provide 2nd and where appropriate 3rd level support to fire stations, fire rescue vehicles and telecommunications project management.

The Regional Telecommunications Specialist will be integrated within a regional environment as part of a small team serving operational communications reporting to the National Telecommunications Manager.  The role is regionally based but will provide nationally consistent support where appropriate.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Providing specialist telecommunications support to operational activities.
  • Ensuring that operational telecommunications requirements are understood and met
  • Supplier liaison and procurement advice at region and national level as appropriate
    Operational telecommunications advice and support to Fire and Emergency NZ and its contractors.
  • Project Manage Telecommunications Projects at a Regional level
  • Maintain front-line field relationships for the ICTS group.
  • Maintain compliance with Fire and Emergency NZ & ICT standards, policies and guidelines.
  • Co-ordinate installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment
  • Assist in the implementation of ICTS projects as required
  • Day to day operations
  • Assist operational staff with telecommunications issues
  • Liaise with 3rd parties on regional telecommunication matters
  • Ensure nationally consistent ICT standards are maintained to support rural requirements
  • 2nd and 3rd level communications support and fault resolution
  • Maintains expertise in the field of telecommunications and associated technology
  • Any other duties consistent with the position as may be required from time to time

About you

To succeed in this role you will have the following:

  • Proven radio communications design, installation and support experience
  • Able to build and support hardware devices from standard off the shelf products
  • Communications hardware knowledge and experience
  • Proven experience in Communications technologies
  • Management of small technical projects
  • Tertiary qualification or experience in telecommunications.
  • Proven customer service experience
  • Contract or project management experience
