Planning Manager

We are looking for a Tier 4 Planning manager to manage a small team which leads the Business Planning and Local Planning functions for Fire and Emergency NZ.

About us

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was set up under new legislation in July 2017, combining 40 urban and rural fire services and 14,000 people. We became one national emergency management organisation to keep New Zealanders, their property and our unique environment safe.

We respond to structure and vegetation fires. And while the core role of firefighters is to put out fires, it is much more than that. We rescue trapped people as a result of transport accidents or other incidents, urban search and rescue, deal with dangerous substances, weather events and natural disasters.

Our firefighters educate communities to prepare for emergencies, prevent and mitigate them, and teach them how to recover more quickly when they do happen.

We respond to a wide variety of emergencies including motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, dealing with hazardous substances, severe weather events and natural disasters. We work to reduce risk to make our communities safer, through fire safety campaigns, research, and by providing advice on the Building Code.

About the role

The Planning Manager is a Tier 4 position, for a period of 6 months on a Fixed Term contract. The role sits within our Strategy and Performance Directorate

This role will manage a small team of 3 x FTE’s (1 x Senior Business Planning Advisor, 2 x Principal/Senior Local Planning Advisors). Two of these FTE’s will potentially be new to Fire and Emergency. 

This role will:

  • Lead the process for Fire and Emergency’s business planning for the coming FY and help some areas of the business plan for longer term planning processes. 
  • Lead processes for enabling Regions, Branches and Directorates to develop annual business plans, working with other teams to ensure corresponding SPE measures, investment bids and budgets are also completed.
  • Provide advice and guidance to design and implement process improvement within the team to ensure systems and processes for managing planning are in place, fit for purpose and future proof.
  • Oversee the process to implement and embed local planning within the organisation. Local planning is a new function for Fire and Emergency and involves ensuring a local view in our organisational planning processes.

The preferred candidate will bring:

  • Recent experience in a similar role in the public sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing planning staff and processes in a public sector agency

This is a Fixed Term Contract for a period of 6 months and the salary mid-point is $150,000 pro-rata
