About us 

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was set up under new legislation in July 2017, combining 40 urban and rural fire services and 14,000 people. We became one national emergency management organisation to keep New Zealanders, their property and our unique environment safe.

Our firefighters educate communities to build their resilience by helping them prepare for, respond to and recover well from emergencies.

We respond to a wide variety of emergencies including motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, dealing with hazardous substances, severe weather events and natural disasters. We work to reduce risk to make our communities safer, through fire safety campaigns, research, and by providing advice on the Building Code.

About the role

The Senior Insights Analyst provides high quality performance information, analysis and reporting for the Safety, Health and Wellbeing (SHW) team. This involves applying a range of quantitative and qualitative frameworks to gather, analyse and report on SHW performance across Fire and Emergency NZ.  It will also provide accessible and insightful commentary on key initiatives to support the safety health and wellbeing of our people.

This role will require someone who can:

  • Identify and collate information from a range of sources and use it as the foundation for producing accurate, evidence-based reports and trend analysis that informs future workplans, projects and ongoing risk management
  • Provide informed and compelling advice, with clear rationale and recommendations for continued improvements in strategic and operational health, safety and wellbeing performance
  • Contribute to work being led by others across the organisation as required, by providing accurate, objective analysis and advice within specified timeframes
  • Develop analytical tools and dashboards that provide insights to influence the look, feel and content of safety, health and wellbeing governance/management
  • Support the maintenance of consistent analytics and reporting practices and methods across the organisation by ensuring alignment with standards of other data and intelligence teams across Fire and Emergency NZ

About you

You are the type of person who enjoys crunching the numbers, thinking strategically and working on the detail.  At the same time you know how to make the data easy to understand and deliver this in a way that benefits others in your team and their stakeholders. Some previous experience working in the Safety Health & Wellbeing space would be beneficial. This is a great opportunity for someone who is at an Intermediate level, looking to step up into a senior role.

To succeed in this role, you will be:

  • Highly organised and disciplined - has a patient, methodical yet pragmatic approach
  • A self-starter, who can use initiativeto pre-empt information requests and be approachable with a can-do attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills and able to share knowledge clearly and confidently, verbally and in writing
  • Experienced in the public service industry
  • Flexible, adaptive and responsive to change
  • A Wizz at influencing people and relationship building
  • Able to make numbers engaging and easy to understand


  • Ability to learn new systems, translate data into insights and a drive to understand and tell the story behind the data
  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly familiarise themselves with a subject, identify sources or examples of leading practice and use these to enhance the delivery to the organisation leveraging subject matter experts
  • Significant experience as a data, business information or insights analyst
  • Strong data analysis skills, report design and generation experience


  • Experienced in the use of Cognos
