About us

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was set up under new legislation in July 2017, combining 40 urban and rural fire services and 14,000 people. We became one national emergency management organisation to keep New Zealanders, their property and our unique environment safe.

Our firefighters educate communities to build their resilience by helping them prepare for, respond to and recover well from emergencies.

We respond to a wide variety of emergencies including motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, dealing with hazardous substances, severe weather events and natural disasters. We work to reduce risk to make our communities safer, through fire safety campaigns, research, and by providing advice on the Building Code.

About the role

The Senior Incident Management Specialist is collectively accountable for ensuring the development, implementation, maintenance and continuous improvement of operational response capability advisory functions for the organisation. The team has a collectively responsible for all aspects of operational response capability activities across the response capability functions to ensure that, national operational service and support needs are met.

The Senior Incident Management Specialist will be responsible for the design and development of Fire and Emergency’s unified incident management system for all operational incident management responses across the organisation and to support an All of Government incident management emergency response. This will include the development of the entire incident management framework and associated incident management manuals and guidelines.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Significant operational experience in Fire and Emergency (at SSO / DPRFO or above) or similar fire related organisation experience
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, regulations and compliance requirements
  • Detailed understanding of New Zealand Emergency Management System or related Incident Management Systems (ICS)
  • Understanding of New Zealand’s domestic and international response capability including USAR and wildfire
  • Exceptional time management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects or pieces of work simultaneously
  • Ability to convey complex and technical information to a range of audiences and to credibly represent the organisation in a range of settings
  • Understanding of the statutory framework and the political, social and economic settings in which the organisation operations, including the machinery of government and policy making process
  • Ability to quick forge strong relationships with a broad range of people
  • Substantial computer literacy in Microsoft applications

Desirable

  • A related tertiary qualification
  • Experience in writing policies, standard operational procedures and guidelines
  • Experience in Project Management methodology
  • Understanding of New Zealand’s National Security System
  • Experience in Standards interpretation and documentation
