Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Emergency Mobile Alerts

We've partnered with the National Emergency Management Agency and other agencies including NZ Police, Ministry for Primary Industries and Ministry of Health to use the Emergency Mobile Alerts (EMA) system to alert people if their lives, property or health are at serious risk.

Messages get sent to mobile phones that are enabled to receive these alerts. Alerts can be targeted to areas affected by serious hazards. They are sent to every enabled phone in the targeted area. The system uses cell broadcast technology to do this, so you don't need to sign up for them.

To check if your mobile phone can receive these alerts and to get more info, visit civildefence.govt.nz

The Emergency Mobile Alerts system operates in accordance with an agreed Support and Operational Model developed by NEMA in consultation with the participating agencies.
