Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Why join?

When you become part of the crew at Fire and Emergency New Zealand, you join a team of more than 14,000 firefighters and support teams that are out there 24/7, 365 days a year making a difference in people’s lives.

At Fire and Emergency New Zealand, no matter where in the organisation you work, everyone is working toward one common goal, and that’s protecting and preserving lives and property. While the role of firefighters and the types of emergencies we respond to have changed over the years, our services have always remained at the heart of communities across Aotearoa.

Being able to support personnel on the frontline to keep communities safe from fires and emergencies is hugely rewarding and gives a sense of contributing to a wider purpose.

Joining Fire and Emergency as a permanent employee will unlock some great benefits to support your work-life balance and wellbeing.

Nothing is more important to us than our people – he waka eke noa | Everybody in one canoe with no exception. So, come and join the crew.

More about Fire and Emergency

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was established in 2017, under new legislation which saw the amalgamation of 40 urban and rural fire services and 14,000 people. We became one national emergency management organisation to keep New Zealanders, their property and our unique environment safe.

These days, firefighters do so much more than just fight fires.

In addition to protecting life and property from fire, firefighters also respond to medical calls, motor vehicle crashes, hazardous substances, severe weather and natural disasters. Our firefighters educate communities to prepare for emergencies, prevent and mitigate them, and teach them how to recover more quickly when they do happen.
