Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

What is your first way out?

The best way out is the normal way you come in and out of your home. e.g. Down the hall and out the front door. Picture what this would be like in the darkness and confusion of a fire.

What is your second way out?

You need an alternative way out if the first one becomes unsafe or obstructed during a fire.

Are any exits locked, blocked or hard to escape?

Meeting place

Where is your safe meeting place?

Once you are out, don’t go back inside for any reason - the heat and smoke of a fire are overpowering.

Does everybody know the plan?

Once you’ve discussed your plan, it’s a great idea to practice your 3-Step Escape Plan, just like you would a fire drill at work.
