Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Fire restrictions eased for parts of Otago

Fire restrictions have been eased in Otago on Monday, 3 March.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand lifted the restricted fire season in the Clutha and Coastal Waitaki fire zones. That means those areas are now in an open fire season.

The total fire ban in Strath Taieri fire zone was also lifted on Monday. This area returns to a restricted fire season. This means a permit is required to light a fire in open air. If you already hold a fire permit that is still valid (not expired), you don't need to apply for a new one. The ban on fireworks has also been lifted.

To check the fire season status for your location, to notify us that you're lighting a fire, or to apply for a fire permit, please visit www.checkitsalright.nz.
