Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Fire & Emergency New Zealand

Open fire season for Marlborough District

Open fire season for Marlborough District

The restricted fire season in Marlborough has been revoked as of 8.00am 19 April 2023 until further notice.

This means the whole of Marlborough District moves to an open fire season, with the exception of Department of Conversation land, where permits continue to be required for open air fires.

Fire and Emergency Group Manager Chris Hayles says wetter conditions and cooler temperatures have reduced the risk levels to a point where restrictions are no longer required.

“However, I encourage everyone to continue to check weather conditions before lighting any outdoor fires,” Chris says. “If it’s windy, or there has been a dry period, leave your outdoor fire until another day.”
