Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Fire & Emergency New Zealand

Open fire season for Mid South Canterbury

Open fire season for Mid South Canterbury

The restricted fire season in all of the Mid South Canterbury High Country has been revoked.

The change took place at 11.59pm Tuesday 11 April 2023, with an open season now in place.

This means the whole of Mid South Canterbury is now in an Open Fire Season, with the exception of the Geraldine Forest Zone, the Waimate Forest Zone and all Public Conservation Lands. These areas remain in a permanent restricted fire Season, with permitsrequired for open air fires in those areas.

Fire and Emergency District Manager Rob Hands says the approach of winter with lower temperatures and higher humidity has reduced the risk levels to the point that fire restrictions are no longer required.

However, he says he wants everyone to still ensure that any outdoor burning is carried out in a safe and considerate manner.
