Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Outdoor fire restrictions loosen in Waikato

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is moving the fire season from prohibited to restricted in Waikato and Coromandel from 8am on Monday 7 April, until further notice.

This means open air fires will be allowed if people have a permit from Fire and Emergency, which they can apply for at checkitsalright.nz.

Waikato District Manager Daryl Trim says the affected areas include Waikato, Hauraki, Matamata-Piako, Thames-Coromandel, Hamilton, Waipa, Otorohanga and Waitomo.

“If you’re looking to get a controlled burn under way next week, you should apply for your permit now so you’re not waiting for it to be processed,” he says.

“When applying on checkitsalright.nz, you need to pay attention to the restrictions and comply with any conditions.

“That will help us keep Waikato and Coromandel safe while autumn is still on the dry side.”
