Port Hills fire update #26
23 Huitanguru 2024
Fire and Emergency crews will continue work extinguishing hotspots at Port Hills today.
Overnight the drone team identified four hotspots, and crews have since identified more this morning, which they are digging out and extinguishing. This includes a visible smoker (a hotspot that has broken through ground and is smoking) between Worsleys Road and the Christchurch Adventure Park.
Unless there are any significant changes to the fire ground, the last drone flight will be completed tonight.
Tonight’s focus for the drone team will be the area around the Christchurch Adventure Park.
The forecast for tomorrow is for hot weather and strong north-westerly winds. This means there will be extreme fire danger conditions across the Canterbury region.
Crews are prepared for an increased fire danger on the ground, and they will remain on site over the weekend, monitoring for any activity or hotspots.
Ahead of the weekend’s forecast, Fire and Emergency is urging everyone to remember that Canterbury is in a prohibited fire season and outdoor fires are banned.
People are asked to take extra care with any activity that could start a fire, including hot works like grinding and welding, as well as mowing.
Anyone seeing smoke should call 111 straight away.
This will be today's only update, unless there are any significant changes.
