Your checklist

  • Get low

    Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

    If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

    A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

    Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

    A closed door buys you time.

    It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

    People have died by going back into a fire.

    Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Call emergency services as soon as you are out and safe. Ask for FIRE.

Clearly state your address and let the operator know it anyone is still inside or has not made it to the safe meeting place.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Board is seeking local voices for new Auckland Local Advisory Committee

The Fire and Emergency New Zealand Board is looking for members to join its new Auckland Local Advisory Committee (LAC).

Local Advisory Committees (LACs) ensure communities’ voices and interests are heard and considered in national and local planning. LACs also provide local advice to help better support their community to reduce risk, prepare for and respond to emergencies, and recover quickly when they happen.

Fire and Emergency Te Hiku Region Manager Ron Devlin says the committees are made up of well-connected local people who are passionate about supporting their communities both now and into the future.

"Committees have strong connections with a broad range of people and interests within their communities," he says.

"The new LAC will represent our biggest city - 1.65 million people, made up of over 200 ethnic groups, spread over a mix of densely populated, sprawling urban and rural areas, and rapidly changing spaces.

"It is vital to the success of our LAC that we have the right blend of people to give voice to the varied ethnic and cultural communities, businesses, commercial, industrial, and social sectors.

"We are looking for members with governance and leadership experience, and emerging leaders, in these various communities and sectors.

If you know people like this in your community that might be a good fit, please encourage them to apply."

Applications for membership open on 25 September and close on 23 October 2024.
