Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Muriwai Volunteer Fire Brigade

This is a volunteer station. That means all members of our brigade dedicate their own time in order to serve this community.

We respond to a variety of emergencies in our local area. These include:

  • Fires
  • Medical emergencies
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Search and rescue
  • Civil defence
  • Natural disaster responses

And of course, we also offer fire safety advice.

If you want to visit this station, get in touch by phone on 09 411 7999* or email Muriwai-Officers@fireandemergency.nz or come by the station on a Monday training night. Note the station does not have full time staff so there could be some delay in returning your call.

*In the event of emergency do not use this phone number, instead dial 111.

A Proud Tradition in Muriwai

The Muriwai Volunteer Fire Force was established in 1965 by a group of locals who were worried that the communities' isolation left it vulnerable to fires and other emergencies.

The brigade started life as a 'Fire Party' out of a small shed (still present at the back of our current station) with firefighting equipment that was funded by the community.

Over time, the brigade evolved to become a Rural Fire Force, part of the National Rural Fire Authority and funded mainly by Auckland Council

In November 2014, we became part of the New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS) and in July 2017 both Rural Fire and NZFS merged to become one national agency, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ).

Currently, the brigade operates an IVECO pump tender and a specialised Ford Ranger 4WD for off-road emergencies such as beach rescues and fires.

Over the many years of change and evolving since we were founded, our dedication and commitment has remained steadfast. We are proud to provide a fire and rescue capability to protect and serve our community.
