Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Become a Career Firefighter

Aotearoa New Zealand needs Career Firefighters. We’re looking for people who care about communities and want to help people. To be a Career Firefighter, you’ll need to be a team player and bring courage, compassion and energy to the role.

Life as a Career Firefighter, means:

  • You will make a real difference in other people’s lives and the wider community – whether it’s protecting or preserving lives, property or the environment.
  • No two days will be the same and you will respond to all kinds of emergencies – fires, motor vehicle incidents, medical emergencies, and anything else your community needs. The firefighter role is dynamic, and you’ll be prepared to respond to any call for help.
  • You will have the opportunity to build an exciting career with Fire and Emergency NZ. We offer extensive training and development and you’ll have the chance to pursue a number of different career pathways.
  • You’ll work in shifts with four days on and four days off which enables you to spend time on the things that matter most to you outside of work.
