Recruitment for Canterbury Local Advisory Committee is closed. Appointments will be announced in June 2025.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand works with Local Advisory Committees (LACs) around the motu (country) to ensure communities’ voices and interests are reflected in our national and local planning. They provide us with independent advice on what their communities value, their needs, and the risks they face.
LACs help to shape the future of Fire and Emergency’s support for communities by enabling us to better understand what matters to communities - now and in the future. This means we can better support them to prepare for, respond to, and recover well from emergencies when they happen.
The new LAC will be the voice for both Canterbury and Mid-South Canterbury, known for its diverse demographic mix, expansive plains, the Southern Alps, and a rugged coastline. The area faces risks from earthquakes, particularly due to its location near the Alpine Fault, as well as flooding and the effects of climate change, including wildfires and more extreme weather events. Canterbury's economy is driven by agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, technology and its vibrant urban and cultural scene.
The LAC will cover the area from just south of the Clarence River down to the Waitaki River.
We look forward to announcing members of our new Canterbury LAC in due course.
