Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Recruiting soon for Wellington Local Advisory Committee

Fire and Emergency New Zealand works with Local Advisory Committees (LACs) around the motu (country) to ensure communities’ voices and interests are reflected in our national and local planning. They provide us with independent advice on what their communities value, their needs, and the risks they face.

LACs help to shape the future of Fire and Emergency’s support for communities by enabling us to better understand what matters to communities - now and in the future. This means we can better support them to prepare for, respond to, and recover well from emergencies when they happen.

The new LAC will represent Wellington, our third biggest urban area, known for its diverse population, scenic landscapes and a dynamic economy centred around creative industries, tourism, hospitality, and professional services. As the capital city of New Zealand, Wellington is home to the country's public sector, with its many government departments and agencies. The LAC will cover Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti Coast, Hutt City and Wairarapa.

It is vital to the success of our LAC that we have the right mix of people to give voice to the varied ethnic and cultural communities, businesses, commercial, industrial and social sectors.

We are looking for members with governance and leadership experience to be the voice of these various communities and sectors. New and emerging future leaders in these communities are also welcome.

Applications for membership open on 3 February and close on 2 March 2025.
