Remaining Cordons Lifted
As of 6pm on Sunday 24 February, the remaining controlled access cordons in Teapot, Eves and Redwood valleys have been lifted.
Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Controller Jim Frater said that he’s delighted the cordons are being lifted but reminded people to be vigilant.
“We’ve had 5mm of rain this morning, but with no follow-up rain expected in the near future, the fire risk across the region will continue to be extreme. Please stay prepared to evacuate should the need arise."
“As of Sunday afternoon, the fire is contained and controlled with a 30m boundary black-out (fire break) around the entire perimeter. Once the cordons are lifted, NZ Police will continue to monitor the valleys throughout the coming days and nights.”
Residents of Teapot, Eves and Redwood have been informed by email and text message about the removal of cordons.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand is working on increasing the boundary blackout zone from 30m to 50m to provide extra security.
Mr Frater also reminded people that the Section 91, machinery ban directive is still in place, as is the State of Emergency, and that parks and reserves in Nelson and Tasman are still closed.
People wanting to apply for a Section 91 exemption can do so through the Tasman District Council website.
