Mt Creighton Fire - Update 7

Thermal imaging has detected 13 hotspots within the Mt Creighton fireground this morning.

Fire and Emergency Incident Controller Mark Mawhinney says ground crews with hand tools are working to extinguish seven of the hotspots while helicopters are waterbombing the other six, which can’t be accessed on the ground because of their location.

No new fire activity has been detected today.

It is getting windier on the fireground with sustained speeds up 30-40 km/hr. Operations will be suspended for safety once the gusts exceed about 60km/hr. NIWA is predicting gusts of up to 120km/hr later today, dying down again overnight.

Mr Mawhinney says planning is underway for tomorrow’s operations, to continue mopping up.
