Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

IGNITE Magazine: Issue 7

Ignite (Te Hiringa O Te Tangata) tells the stories of the men and women across the country who dedicate themselves to protecting life and property in their urban and rural communities. It represents the voices of our firefighters and the people who work behind the scenes to support them.

In this edition we look at the leadership development in our organisation, especially at how the youth in our industry get involved. Whether that's taking part in the Youth in Emergency Services (YES) programme, how Akaroa is taking it back to school or how brothers like Nathan and Kieran Sullivan grew to become young leaders.

Additionally, we look at how our brigades and fire forces give back to their communities; like Turangi diving in to help out at a camp, working with Tairawhiti's youth, and assisting our support groups.

We hope you enjoy!
