Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Chemical Incident in Central Wellington

Fire and Emergency is responding to reports of a chemical leak in Central Wellington and is asking people to avoid the area around the intersection of Salamanca Rd and Kelburn Parade.

Police have evacuated about 50 people from a roughly 200m perimeter around the area since the first reports were received shortly before 9pm.

At this stage the substance has not been identified. It is reported to be odourless.

However, anyone who is in the area and is feeling unwell should call 111 without delay.
