Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Gas Leak - Karaka residents warned to stay indoors

Residents living near the Hingaia Peninsula School in Karaka, Auckland, are advised to stay inside with doors and windows closed and await further instructions because of a gas leak in the area.

Fire and Emergency is responding to the incident outside the school. It is understood that a tunnelling machine struck a gas main earlier this evening.

Hingaia Road has been closed at the intersections with Kuhanui Road and Walters Road.

Three fire trucks and two support units are at the scene.

We will issue a further update when new information is available.
