Your checklist
  • Get low

    Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

    If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

    A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

    Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

    A closed door buys you time.

    It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

    People have died by going back into a fire.

    Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Walters Bluff fire

A fire has broken out above Iwa Road moving to Walters Bluff. Fire and Emergency has sent two aircraft and 10 appliances to the fire. Police will advise local residents of the need to evacuate.

Pigeon Valley Road Evacuations

Wakefield residents north of SH6 between Pigeon Valley Road and Simmonds Road have been asked to evacuate.

As a precautionary measure, remaining residents in Wakefield should be ready to evacuate.

People are asked to please take water, food, medicines, pets and valuables and asked to register at Saxton Field Stadium, Stoke or ring 03 543 8400.

Pigeon Valley fire

Fire observers in helicopters are in position over Wakefield. Drones will be doing further assessment and monitoring of fire the  line through the smoke.
