Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Access for Valley Residents today
Residents of Redwood, Teapot and Eves Valley will all be able to access their properties from 8 am until 2 pm today.
Controller Roger Ball said the decision was made on the advice of Fire and Emergency and Police, taking into account today’s weather, the conditions on the fireground, and the ability to safely evacuate residents if the situation changes.

Fire update
Crews were busy overnight with some flareups and working on hot spots and unsafe trees within the containment zone.

Media standup at 1 pm today
Mayor Richard Kempthorne will hold a media standup at 1 pm in the Tasman District Council office foyer, to announce whether or not the State of Civil Defence Emergency will be extended this afternoon.
