Your checklist
  • Get low

Smoke is poisonous and more deadly than flames.

If you breathe smoke for more than a few breaths it can kill you.

  • Be fast

A house fire can kill you in less than three minutes.

Don't spend time trying to save possessions.

  • Close doors

A closed door buys you time.

It slows down the spread of fire, giving you more time to get to safety.

  • Get out - stay out!

People have died by going back into a fire.

Don't leave the meeting place to go back inside for any reason.

Smoke from wetlands fire continuing to impact areas near Dargaville

The fire west of Dargaville burning in wetlands is continuing to produce large amounts of smoke, and will do for at least the next three days.

Fire and Emergency Assistant Commander Denis Cooper says 20 firefighters are at the scene each day trying to limit the amount of smoke being produced, but because it is burning in wetlands and deep in very large tree stumps, it is very difficult to extinguish.

"The fire has been contained and we are working hard to reduce the amount of smoke being produced by this fire, but we expect smoke will still be present in the area until at least Thursday.

"We want to thank everyone in the surrounding area for their patience during this time."

Nearby residents who may be affected by the smoke should, as much as possible, close windows and doors and reduce outdoor exercise. Residents are advised to call Healthline on 0800 611 116 if they have any related health concerns or experience any respiratory difficulties as a result of smoke.
